Tucked away in the Mérrodestraat, the Sint-Antoniuskapel whispers tales of a bygone era. This unassuming chapel, now repurposed, once served as a vital spiritual hub for the burgeoning Sint-Antonius van Padua Parish. The late 19th century witnessed rapid urbanization around Brussels. This led to a surge in population in Vorst. In 1897, the Sint-Antonius van Padua Parish was established to cater to the growing community’s spiritual needs. The parish’s name honored an existing Saint Anthony chapel near the Brussels-Luttre railway. This older chapel had a rich history. Farmers would gather annually for a procession and bless their livestock, seeking Saint Anthony’s protection against disease. The Sint-Antoniuskapel in Mérrodestraat was initially a temporary solution, a “noodkapel” constructed to serve until a larger church could be built. However, it quickly became inadequate for the growing congregation. The municipality responded by planning a more permanent structure. In 1899, they envisioned a grand church as the centerpiece of a new urban plan. This plan included the Sint-Antoniusvoorplein and the surrounding streets, designed to enhance the church’s prominence. The Sint-Antoniuskapel’s story doesn’t end with the new church’s construction. In 1912, it was deconsecrated and transformed into a printing house. This transformation involved significant interior renovations and the addition of new window openings on the facade. Today, the building stands as a testament to the evolving needs of a community, its simple brick facade hiding layers of history. The Sint-Antoniuskapel might not boast the grandeur of its successor, but its story offers a unique glimpse into Vorst’s past. It serves as a reminder of a time when a small chapel played a crucial role in the spiritual life of a rapidly changing neighborhood.
