Did you know there’s a statue in Seoul so iconic, it’s been called “South Korea’s most iconic statue”? Right here in Gwanghwamun Plaza stands the majestic Statue of King Sejong. It’s a tribute to the great King Sejong, the fourth king of the Joseon dynasty. He’s a towering figure in Korean history, not just literally in this 9.5-meter-tall, 20-ton bronze form. King Sejong is revered for his contributions to Korean culture and intellect. He’s most famous for inventing Hangul, the Korean alphabet.
The Statue of King Sejong wasn’t just plopped here randomly. It was specifically commissioned as part of the Gwanghwamun Plaza renovation in 2009. The plaza, right next to the historic Gyeongbokgung Palace, needed a centerpiece. And who better than the king who shaped the very language Koreans use today? Interestingly, there was a debate about whether to move an existing statue of King Sejong from Deoksugung Palace. But public opinion favored a brand-new statue, one befitting this prominent location. The sculptor, Kim Yeong-won, a professor at Hongik University, depicted the king in a seated position. This contrasts with the nearby standing statue of Admiral Yi Sun-sin, another revered Korean hero.
The statue’s unveiling on October 9, 2009, was a grand event, coinciding with Hangul Day. President Lee Myung-bak himself attended, celebrating the 563rd anniversary of Hangul’s creation. Look closely at the statue. One hand is raised, and the other holds a book, symbolizing his dedication to knowledge. The sides of the statue are even engraved with Hangul characters. At the base, you’ll see miniature versions of a celestial globe, rain gauge, and sundial. These inventions are also attributed to King Sejong, showcasing his wide-ranging intellect. While Hangul is his most celebrated achievement, he also advanced agriculture, literature, science, technology, and Confucian philosophy in Korea.
Right near the statue is “Sejong’s Story,” a small museum dedicated to his life and accomplishments. If you have time, it’s well worth a visit to delve deeper into the legacy of the king immortalized in bronze before you. The Statue of King Sejong is more than just a monument. It’s a symbol of Korean ingenuity, perseverance, and cultural pride.
