Hidden within Detroit’s historical tapestry lies Mount Olive Church. It stands as a silent testament to the city’s ever-evolving landscape. Mount Olive Church wasn’t always its name. The building first housed St. Luke’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. St. Luke’s was established in 1888. It served as an offshoot of St. Paul’s. Initially, services were held in a small chapel on Kercheval at Field Streets. By the 1940s, the congregation sought to move eastward. They purchased land at the corner of Kercheval and Seminole. World War II rationing delayed construction. The church temporarily occupied a nearby mansion. Construction finally began in 1949. A 400-seat Norman-Gothic style church arose. It was completed in 1950. St. Luke’s disbanded around 1982. Mount Olive East Missionary Baptist Church then took residence. Their previous location on Kercheval was demolished. It was part of the Chrysler Jefferson North plant expansion in 1991. Mount Olive Church seemingly closed its doors around 2009. The building has remained vacant since then. The church was listed for sale in more recent times, seeking a buyer with a vision for its future. This magnificent structure patiently awaits its next chapter.
