Journey back to the 15th century at Chùa Linh Quang. Under the reign of Le Thanh Tong, a peculiar discovery in Bao Thien village, near present-day Hanoi Cathedral, set in motion the creation of this sacred place. The villagers unearthed a stone statue of a lady. A small temple was built to honor her. This temple eventually evolved into the Chùa Linh Quang we see today. Chùa Linh Quang, also known as Ba Da Pagoda, or the Pagoda of the Lady in Stone, holds a special place in Hanoi’s spiritual landscape. It’s not just a historical landmark but also the headquarters of the Hanoi Buddhist Association and home to the Hanoi Buddhist Intermediate School. The pagoda hosts important Buddhist ceremonies throughout the year. Chùa Linh Quang even welcomed a prominent visitor, President Ho Chi Minh, on January 5, 1946. He spoke to the monks, nuns, and Buddhists. He emphasized the importance of Buddhist involvement in revolutionary and social works. The pagoda’s architecture reflects a blend of styles. The front street boasts a distinct typographic design. The middle street showcases interconnected “nail letters,” creating a square architectural block. Inside, wooden statues populate the space. Interestingly, this short street houses both Buddhist and Christian beliefs, a testament to Hanoi’s diverse religious tapestry. Inside Chùa Linh Quang, you’ll find impressive artifacts. A statue called “Phat Lam,” or the statue with a loving smile, was once considered one of Hanoi’s four treasures. Two bronze bells, cast in 1823 and 1881, resonate with the echoes of the past. A bronze gong from 1842 adds to the collection of historical relics within Chùa Linh Quang. The pagoda is also known as a place of asceticism for patriarchs of the Thien sect. This sect is one of the two main Buddhist sects in North Vietnam. Chùa Linh Quang stands as a place of serenity and contemplation, amidst the bustling city. Its history, intertwined with both spiritual and political figures, and its blend of architectural styles make it a captivating destination.
