A forgotten bridge. A forgotten emperor’s path. That’s the story of Tianqiao. Right here in front of us stands a replica. It’s a small thing really. A simple stone structure. But this unassuming bridge holds a powerful secret.

Tianqiao means Heavenly Bridge. It’s more than just a name. It’s a legacy. This bridge once connected the Forbidden City to the Temple of Heaven. The emperor. Only the emperor could cross this bridge. He used it to travel to the Temple of Heaven. He went there for important ceremonies. Think of the weight of that journey. The weight of the emperor’s role.

The original Tianqiao was built over 600 years ago. It was during the Yuan Dynasty. It continued to be used during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It spanned a small drainage ditch. A ditch that would have cut the Central Axis in two. The bridge kept the axis whole. A practical and symbolic bridge.

When the emperor wasn’t using Tianqiao it was closed. A wooden gate kept it secure. Two simpler bridges were nearby. They were for other members of the imperial family. Officials and servants used those.

Today Tianqiao is better known as a bustling area. It’s a place of markets. It’s a place of street performers. A guide from the 1930s called it a must-see. He said that anyone who visited Beijing without seeing Tianqiao would regret it. That’s the spirit that lives on here.

The Tianqiao Theatre and Performing Arts Centre keep that spirit alive. They host shows of all kinds. Acrobatics. Opera. Even mock street performances for tourists. They aim to make the area a large performing arts district. That’s a wonderful tribute to the area’s past. A past that includes this small forgotten bridge. Tianqiao. A bridge once reserved only for the Son of Heaven.
