Listen closely. St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Houston, Texas, began with a small group of Methodists. This group met in the summer of 1945 at the home of Exa and Loyal Nelms. Their home was near the Westheimer site where St. Luke’s stands today. Ms. Nelms often recalled, “St. Luke’s was born that evening.”

Other meetings followed. Enthusiasm grew. On Sunday, November 11, 1945, the first service was held. It took place in the auditorium of Lamar High School. In 1945, Lamar High School and the new River Oaks neighborhood marked Houston’s western edge.

The founders of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church dreamed big. They wanted a church with an extraordinary impact for Christ. They wanted it built to leave a legacy for generations. Through years of growth and change, St. Luke’s has stayed true. It honors its founders’ vision of Christ-led service and community. This vision extends within the church and into the broader world.

The church spire serves as a visual beacon. It guides those seeking a home in Christ. St. Luke’s hopes its congregation’s faith, kindness, and generosity will be visible. These “spires” of faith should shine in the community and throughout the world.

Dr. Tom Pace asks, “What legacy will we leave for those who come after us?” He hopes future generations will be open to God’s leading. Just like those who gathered in that living room over 75 years ago.

Today, St. Luke’s United Methodist Church is dedicated. It fosters spiritual growth and community service. This inclusive church offers much. It has worship services, educational programs, and outreach. These meet the needs of its diverse congregation.

With a focus on connection and faith, St. Luke’s engages in ministries. These support adults, students, and children. They also address crucial community issues. By promoting fellowship and actively serving, St. Luke’s plays a vital role. It enhances well-being and creates a positive impact. Whether through prayer, worship, or service, the church is committed to uplifting all.

St. Luke’s United Methodist Church also has a remarkable organ. It’s called the Pillot Memorial Organ. M.P. MÖLLER created it as Opus 9090 in 1959. The Schantz Organ Company revised it in 2001 and 2014. This organ features four manuals. It includes 77 ranks. It boasts 4,566 pipes and bells.

The church serves a large number of people. Current attendance is around 1,792 people. Services are offered in multiple languages. These include English, Spanish, and Swahili.

Consider St. Luke’s United Methodist Church as more than a building. See it as a living testament to faith. Feel its commitment to community. It is a beacon. It shines brightly in Houston and beyond. Its story is one of vision. It’s also one of steadfast service.
