Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Detroit’s history, Bailey Cathedral Church of God in Christ stands as a testament to faith, resilience, and transformation. Bailey Cathedral wasn’t always a church. It began as Synagogue Adat Shalom in the 1940s. This was a time of significant change in the Bagley Community. Racial covenants, once strictly enforced, were no longer in effect. This allowed a growing Jewish population to establish a presence. Later, in the 1960s, African-American families began moving into the neighborhood. Following the 1967 riots and the implementation of school busing, the demographics shifted, and the Bagley Community became predominantly Black. The Synagogue Adat Shalom transitioned into the Bailey Cathedral Church of God in Christ. This reflects the changing community. Bailey Cathedral stands as a beacon of hope and inclusivity. It carries within its walls the echoes of diverse communities that have called this neighborhood home. Bishop Phillip A. Brooks served as a prominent figure at Bailey Cathedral. He dedicated over 63 years of his life to the New St. Paul Tabernacle Church Of God In Christ. His influence extended beyond the local church. He served as the First Assistant Presiding Bishop and Prelate of the Historic Northeast First Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction of Michigan. He was known as “Mr. Church Of God In Christ” for his unwavering devotion and excellence in ministry. His legacy continues to inspire the congregation of Bailey Cathedral Church of God in Christ.
