Hidden amidst the vibrant tapestry of Brisbane, Pinjarra Hills whispers tales of bygone eras. Pinjarra Hills, a name shrouded in mystery, its origins lost to time, yet its presence deeply etched into the landscape. This tranquil suburb, nestled 16.8 kilometers southwest of Brisbane’s bustling heart, invites you to step back in time. Pinjarra Hills, in the 2021 census, housed a community of 771 souls. Imagine traversing the meandering Moggill Road, the main artery that pulses through this serene enclave. Picture the sun-drenched slopes cascading down to the banks of the majestic Brisbane River. A significant portion of Pinjarra Hills, between Pullenvale Road and the river’s edge, is dedicated to the University of Queensland’s Pinjarra Hills campus. This sprawling 282-hectare research facility stands as a testament to the area’s dedication to knowledge and discovery. But the story of Pinjarra Hills delves deeper into the past. In the 1860s, Patrick Mayne acquired the very land now occupied by the university. Upon his passing, the land was bequeathed to his son, William. Then, in 1922, the estate passed to William’s siblings, Dr. James O’Neil Mayne and Miss Mary Emelia Mayne. In a remarkable act of generosity, the Mayne siblings gifted the land to the University of Queensland in 1923. This gift was intended to further agricultural education, and the land became known as Moggill Farm. The fate of Moggill Farm hung in the balance around the year 2000. The university planned to move its agricultural and veterinary disciplines to its Gatton campus. Rumors swirled that the university intended to sell the land for housing. This sparked a wave of protests from the community. The university denied these plans in 2008, claiming the rumors stemmed from a student exercise. However, the university’s true intentions for the site remained undisclosed, adding another layer of intrigue to the Pinjarra Hills narrative. Today, Pinjarra Hills remains largely a rural residential haven. Apart from the university campus, its landscape retains a tranquil, untouched beauty. As you stand here, imagine the generations who have walked these lands before you. From the Mayne family’s vision to the university’s presence, Pinjarra Hills carries a rich legacy. The mystery of the suburb’s name adds to its allure, a silent echo of the past resonating through time.
