Think of Rathcoole village as we approach The Old Courthouse. It stands proudly on Main Street. This Edwardian Arts and Crafts building has a rich story to tell.

The Old Courthouse opened in 1914. William Cullen designed it. He was Dublin County Surveyor. The Arts and Crafts style was popular then. It was used for post offices and village halls.

Initially, The Old Courthouse served as a Court of Petty Sessions. Minor offences were judged here. It also hosted community events.

But its role changed. In 1925, it became a library. For many years, it was a vibrant community hub. Sadly, the library closed around 1970.

The Old Courthouse continued to serve the community. The Rathcoole Players met here. So did the Rathcoole Residents’ Association. Later, it was known as the Saggart and Rathcoole Community Council.

Over time, the building deteriorated. Yet, it remained important to the community. A recent restoration aimed to preserve its history. It also aimed to enhance its community role.

Dublin County Council recognized its importance. In 1912, they were influenced by Irish Nationalists. This allowed for social improvements. The American Carnegie Trust provided funding. Local lobbying led to the courthouse’s approval. It would also serve as a town hall.

Let’s talk about the land. In 1913, Dublin County purchased it. They bought it from the Mary Mercer Trust for twenty-five pounds. Edward Senior leased the house beside it. His garden was partly on the land. He received five pounds for his loss of use.

The Old Courthouse has seen many uses. After its time as a courthouse, it became a library. Then it was a community center. For periods, it stood vacant.

In 2013, South Dublin Co. Co. took action. They did conservation work. This protected the building. In 2020, they completed a sensitive project. They partnered with the Rathcoole community. The Department of Rural and Community Development supported them. They promoted sustainable development. They also encouraged community engagement.

Today, The Old Courthouse is a place for arts and culture. It hosts events and performances. Culture Night is a highlight.

One Culture Night featured Irish and Ukrainian culture. There was art, music, poetry, and dance. Victoria Zhadko and Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh performed. Alla Shmyhovska exhibited her folk dolls. Rónán Regan led a Sean Nós Dancing workshop. Halyna Budilova shared her poetry. Tom Moran and his group played traditional Irish music.

The Old Courthouse stands as a testament to community. It has adapted to many roles over the years. It is a landmark that connects the past with the present. It is a place for all to enjoy.
