The air hangs heavy with the scent of grapes, a sweet reminder of the region’s rich viticultural history. Welcome to Mesão Frio, a charming town nestled amidst the rolling hills of the Douro Valley. Its name, meaning ‘middle cold’, hints at the crisp climate that shaped its character. Mesão Frio’s origins reach back to the Roman era, with evidence of a castro, an ancient fortified settlement, discovered near the village of Cidadelhe. The town was later established near the Church of São Nicolau, erected at the behest of Queen Maud of Savoy, wife of Afonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal. During the Reconquista, French knights crossed the region, leaving their mark on the church with six tombs adorned with their coat of arms. Today, Mesão Frio continues to weave a captivating tapestry of history and culture, welcoming visitors with open arms.
