Gazing upon Kokubunjidai-Chūō, can you sense the layers of history beneath our feet? Kokubunjidai-Chūō translates to “Kokubunji Stage Central”. This name hints at its connection to Chiba’s past. Kokubunjidai-Chūō is located in Chiba Ward, the heart of Chiba City. This ward holds a significant piece of Chiba’s story. It was once home to the Chiba clan’s Inohana Castle during the Kamakura period. Imagine samurai warriors patrolling these very grounds. The Satomi clan later took control during the Sengoku period. Then, during the Edo period, the Tokugawa shogunate directly ruled this area. The area we now know as Chiba Ward became the town of Chiba after the Meiji Restoration. It also included the villages of Soga, Miyako, Chishiro, and Oihama. Years passed, and these separate entities merged to form the city of Chiba. Then, in 1992, Chiba City was reorganized into wards. Kokubunjidai-Chūō became a part of Chūō Ward. This ward now serves as the city’s administrative center. Kokubunjidai-Chūō is more than just a name.
