“Have you heard the whispers of a divine child?” That’s how many begin their journey to Shri Siddha Baba Balak Nathan Ji. Right here, in the heart of Delhi, stands a beacon of faith. This temple isn’t just bricks and mortar. It is a testament to a timeless legend. Let me tell you the story of Baba Balak Nath.
Baba Balak Nath is no ordinary deity. Many believe he is the reincarnation of Lord Kartikeya. Kartikeya is the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Legend says he was born to defeat the demon Tarkasur.
The story goes back to the Satya Yuga. Lord Shiva was sharing the secret of immortality with Parvati in the Amarnath cave. A parrot overheard the secret. Shiva was angered and threw his trishul at the parrot. The parrot sought refuge in the womb of Rishi Vyasa’s wife. Shiva waited for the parrot to emerge. The gods intervened. They convinced Shiva to bless the child. The parrot was reborn as Shukadev Muni. Other babies born at the same time became famous siddhas. One of them was Baba Balaknath.
Baba Balaknath dedicated three lifetimes to Lord Shiva. In his last birth, he was born in Junagadh, Gujarat. He was named Balak. At three, he left home. Sage Narada guided him to Guru Dattatreya. Dattatreya accepted him as a disciple.
During his travels, Baba stayed at Banwala. Later, he reached Shahtalai in Himachal Pradesh. He became the adopted son of Mata Ratno. He cared for her cows. He started a sacred fire near a banyan tree.
One day, villagers complained that Baba’s cows damaged their crops. Ratno scolded Baba. Baba took her and the village chief to the fields. Miraculously, the crops were unharmed. Ratno realized Baba’s yogic powers. Baba then revealed that he had never eaten the food she brought him. He struck the banyan tree. It revealed a heap of flatbreads. He pushed his tongs into the ground. A spring of buttermilk appeared.
The main shrine is at Shah Talai in Himachal Pradesh. Deot Sidh is a natural cave. Inside is a statue of Baba in padmasana. People offer roti prasad made of wheat flour, clarified butter, and jaggery.
Baba’s relationship with Guru Gorakshanath is complex. Some legends say they had power contests. In one story, Gorakshanath asked Baba to provide seating for his 300 disciples. Baba expanded his towel to accommodate them all. Another time, Gorakshanath tried to bewitch a pond. Baba made the pond disappear.
Another legend says Gorakshanath wanted to split Baba’s ears. Baba refused. He said only Lord Shiva could do that.
Here at Shri Siddha Baba Balak Nathan Ji, you can feel the echoes of these stories. It is believed that Baba Balaknath is still present. His blessings can fulfill desires.
