On a crisp autumn evening, a hush falls over the audience at the NDR Konzerthaus. The air crackles with anticipation. The NDR Konzerthaus, formerly the Landesfunkhaus Niedersachsen, stands proudly on the banks of the Maschsee. This iconic building is more than just a concert hall. It’s the beating heart of Hanover’s vibrant music scene. The NDR Konzerthaus is home to the renowned NDR Radiophilharmonie. This orchestra has graced its stages since its inception in 1950. The NDR Radiophilharmonie, originally comprised of 45 musicians, quickly outgrew its original home, the Kleiner Sendesaal. In 1963, the larger Grosser Sendesaal opened its doors. It now boasts a capacity of 1200, offering a grand stage for the orchestra’s 90 performances per season. Today, the NDR Radiophilharmonie boasts 86 musicians. They fill the NDR Konzerthaus with the sounds of classical masterpieces, alongside innovative contemporary works. On September 28th, 2024, the NDR Konzerthaus hosted a special event. The finals of the prestigious Joseph Joachim Violin Competition took place, showcasing the talents of three promising young violinists. Accompanied by the NDR Radiophilharmonie, under the baton of Stephan Zilias, the finalists performed a major violin concerto. They also premiered “Feder,” a commissioned piece by contemporary composer Enno Poppe. The competition, offering a 30,000 euro prize, gave audiences a glimpse into the future of violin virtuosity. The NDR Konzerthaus continues to be a cultural hub. It offers not only concerts by the resident orchestra but also hosts various other events. Its two acoustically superb halls, the Grosser and Kleiner Sendesaal, cater to a diverse audience, drawing music lovers from Hanover and beyond. The NDR Konzerthaus isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to Hanover’s rich musical heritage, a place where the past and the future of music intertwine.
