The people of Nice often call it Église Sainte-Rita, after the popular Saint of Lost Causes. Step inside the Église de l’Annonciation, and you’ll be greeted by a lavish Baroque interior. It’s a stark contrast to its simple exterior. This ornate style, with its luxurious ornamentation and striking paintings, points to a fascinating past closely tied to powerful religious orders. The Église de l’Annonciation wasn’t always known by this name. Its story goes back to 1248 when it was first mentioned as the Chapelle Saint-Jacques. It served as a parish church and even became entangled in a trade between the Saint-Pons Abbey and the Cathedral Chapter. Imagine the negotiations and agreements made within these very walls. In the 16th century, the Carmelite monks, displaced from their previous home, took over the church.
