“A church built by six determined women,” the tour guide announced, gesturing towards the Fifty Ninth St Baptist Church. The Fifty Ninth St Baptist Church stands as a testament to the unwavering faith and community spirit of its founders: Sister Mary Birton, Sister Marie Cannon, Sister Joann Daney, Sister Frances Lyons, Sister Lois Powell, and Sister Elizabeth White. These six women, driven by their devotion, established the church, laying the foundation for a place of worship that has served generations. Over the years, the Fifty Ninth St Baptist Church has been guided by a succession of devoted pastors, each leaving their mark on the church’s legacy. From Rev. J.H Williams to the current pastor, Dr. Daly Barnes Jr., their leadership has ensured the church remains a beacon of faith and support for the community. Dr. Barnes, a man with an impressive history of service and spiritual leadership, accepted the call to lead the Fifty Ninth St Baptist Church in 2010. His arrival marked the beginning of a new chapter, building upon the church’s strong foundation and continuing its mission of spreading the Gospel and serving its community.
