Have you ever wondered what connects a subway train and a bicycle? Here at Rad & Schiene, you’ll find a unique answer. Rad & Schiene isn’t your typical artwork. It’s a symbol of Hamburg’s innovative spirit and its commitment to sustainable transportation. This intriguing piece represents the transformation of a retired DT3 subway car, a familiar sight on the U3 line, into a functioning bicycle. The “U3-Fiete,” as the bike is affectionately known, is more than just a quirky upcycled creation. Rad & Schiene highlights the city’s vision for a greener future. It showcases the connection between public transport and cycling. The project aimed to give a second life to the iconic silver DT3 trains that once characterized Hamburg’s cityscape. These trains were largely replaced by newer models. Artist Till Kiefer meticulously crafted the U3-Fiete. He used original parts from a decommissioned DT3 car in his Altona workshop. The seat cover became the bicycle saddle. The emergency brake lever transformed into the handlebar brake grip. Even the trash can found a new purpose as the handlebar bag. Rad & Schiene embodies the spirit of upcycling. It’s a testament to Hamburg’s dedication to environmentally friendly transportation options.
