A Genoese banker’s dream. That’s what Palazzo Marino truly is. Standing before this magnificent 16th-century palace you see more than just stone and mortar. You see the ambition of Tommaso Marino a wealthy merchant who commissioned its construction between 1557 and 1563.

Palazzo Marino Milan’s city hall since 1861 holds centuries of history within its walls. It wasn’t always the seat of municipal power. Initially built for Tommaso Marino it reflects his success and influence. The original facade faced Piazza San Fedele not the current Piazza della Scala. That area was different back then. Imagine bustling medieval houses where the elegant plaza now stands. The people of Milan were quite conservative. They weren’t thrilled with the changes. Construction was delayed by local opposition.

Galeazzo Alessi a renowned architect from Perugia designed Palazzo Marino. The courtyard boasts sculptures depicting the Labours of Hercules and Metamorphoses. The Salone dell’Alessi its main hall features stunning frescoes and stuccos. The Marriage of Cupid and Psyche is a highlight. The four seasons are also depicted in the ceiling paintings. Mythological themes such as the Muses Bacchus Apollo and Mercury decorate the walls. Ottavio Semini a talented artist contributed significantly to the interior decoration.

Upon Marino’s death his family was left bankrupt. The palace passed to the state but was later sold. It was then rented to prominent Milanese. The name Marino however endured. Pietro Verri a notable Milanese scholar played a crucial role in its return to state ownership in 1781. It served as administrative and tax offices. Giuseppe Piermarini oversaw restoration at that time.

The building played a role in Milan’s history after the Five Days of Milan in 1848. It briefly housed Lombardy’s government. Its transformation into Milan’s city hall was finalized in 1861. This significant moment led to further restoration and the creation of Piazza della Scala. Luca Beltrami’s design was key to this impressive transformation. A post-World War II restoration followed under Arrigo Buonomo. Damage from bombings was extensive. The original frescoes and stuccos in the Salone dell’Alessi were painstakingly recreated.
