Ever wondered where Flensburg’s students find a home away from home? Welcome to Sandberg. This district in Flensburg is more than just a place on the map. It is a vibrant hub of student life and local history.

Sandberg sits southeast of Flensburg. It includes Achter de Möhl and Adelbylund. The district extends to Sünderup-West, now known as Campus. With Adelbylund, Sandberg touches the historical region of Angeln.

Let’s journey back in time. The Hafermarkt, now part of Sandberg, was first mentioned in 1764. Imagine the bustling market. Local farmers sold their goods. Merchants traded with the locals. Life happened here.

In 1808, something remarkable happened. The Windmühle St Johannis was built. It became a symbol of Sandberg. Even though it is decaying today, it is still an iconic part of the district’s skyline.

Sandberg wasn’t always part of Flensburg. Achter de Möhl was incorporated in 1875. Adelbylund followed in 1970. These areas combined to create the Sandberg we know today. Sünderup joined in 1974. It is now part of Tarup.

The 20th century brought significant changes. Flensburg’s universities chose Sandberg as their home. The Flensburg University of Applied Sciences and the Flensburg University moved here. The Campus area sprung up west of Sünderup. The Wirtschaftsakademie Flensburg also sits near Sandberg. It’s often considered part of St Johannis.

Because of the universities, Sandberg has a young vibe. Many residents are between 18 and 30 years old. The Büchereizentrale Schleswig-Holstein has also been located here for many years.

Sandberg offers more than just student accommodation. The Studentenwerk Schleswig-Holstein manages several halls of residence here. These include Sandberg hall of residence. It offers affordable living for students of Flensburg University. The railway station is close by. It’s just five minutes by bike or ten minutes on foot.

Sandberg hall of residence provides 148 units. These range from furnished flats to shared flats. Some rooms have balconies or terraces. The building has washing machines and bicycle storage. Parking spaces are also available. Fast WLAN is available.

But Sandberg is not just about student life. It is integrated into Flensburg. The city’s neighborhoods each have their own atmosphere. Flensburg’s younger districts have grown around the historic city center.

Flensburg itself has a rich history. It was under Danish rule for over 400 years. It remains a gateway to Scandinavia. With about 88000 residents, it is Schleswig-Holstein’s third largest city.

The area around Flensburg has attracted settlers for a long time. Danish fishermen built a trading village near Johannis church before 1200. Two important trade routes met here. One of these is now the A7 motorway.

So, as we stand here in Sandberg, remember its story. It is a story of markets and windmills. It is a story of growth and learning. Sandberg is a place where history meets the future. It is a vital part of Flensburg.
