Gazing at Roy Memorial Church of God in Christ, imagine a humble beginning. In June 1957, a small group of around 50 Christians gathered at Memorial Elementary School’s cafeteria. They dreamt of establishing a new congregation on Houston’s growing west side. This marked the birth of the Memorial Church of Christ, later to become Roy Memorial Church of God in Christ. Their focus was clear: Biblical teachings and mission work, both nationally and internationally. The congregation quickly outgrew the cafeteria. Land was purchased on Echo Lane using contributions and bond sales. Construction began in mid-1958. By November, the first service was held in their new home, already filled to overflowing. The church continued to expand alongside the burgeoning community. Classrooms were added. The parking lot grew. Wise leaders, foreseeing further growth, secured funds for a larger auditorium, completed in 1963. A Family Center followed in 1985, further enhancing Roy Memorial Church of God in Christ. Even in 2014, an average of 900 people filled the church every Sunday. This growth led to a capital campaign in 2013. The goal was a new gathering space, education building, and chapel. By May 2015, the original building was demolished to make way for these additions. October 2016 marked the completion of this project, breathing new life into Roy Memorial Church of God in Christ.
