Whispers of ancient legends still echo around Đền Miếu Trắng. This sacred place, also known as Thiên Tiên tự, holds a special place in the heart of Hanoi. Đền Miếu Trắng resides within the vibrant neighborhood of 194 phố Đại Cấn in the Ba Đình district. It stands as a testament to the rich spiritual heritage of Vietnam. Đền Miếu Trắng honors the revered Mother Goddess Liễu Hạnh. Her presence has graced this site since the 13th century.

Đền Miếu Trắng sits serenely within a spacious courtyard. It faces the Văn Phác communal house, its main entrance oriented towards the south. The temple complex encompasses various structures. A gate, a crescent-shaped pond, a courtyard, and the main sanctuary where the Mother Goddess is enshrined are key features. The temple gate stands as a two-tiered, tile-roofed structure. Its unique roof corners curve gracefully upwards, forming an elegant, upturned shape. These roofs are adorned with intricate ceramic tiles. The centerpiece of this gate displays three large Chinese characters. These characters translate to “Thiên Tiên tự”, the temple’s alternative name. Two sturdy stone pillars flank the main gate, each topped with a decorative finial. Perched atop these pillars are sculptures of phoenixes. Their heads face outwards, seemingly guarding the entrance to the sacred grounds. Below, intricate carvings of mythical creatures add to the mystical atmosphere. Two smaller gates stand on either side of the main entrance. They mirror its two-tiered design, albeit on a smaller scale. Their roof corners curve gently, adding to the overall aesthetic harmony.

Beyond the gate lies a large courtyard paved with Bat Trang tiles. Within the courtyard, a crescent-shaped pond reflects the sky. Two pavilions, known as Lầu Cô and Lầu Cậu, flank the pond. Facing these pavilions are the Lầu Lục (Northern Pavilion) and Lầu Mẫu Thượng Thiên. The main sanctuary sits at the heart of the complex. It’s a three-room structure with a sweeping tile roof. Its design embodies traditional Vietnamese architectural aesthetics. The roof is adorned with a unique ridge decorated with a dragon motif. Đền Miếu Trắng’s main building consists of a five-compartment structure with curved roofs. A dragon and moon motif decorates the roof ridge. The back of the main building is known as the hậu cung, the rear sanctuary.

Đền Miếu Trắng boasts intricate decorations throughout its architecture. These decorations reflect traditional Vietnamese folk art styles. The colorful ceramic tile mosaics on the roof ridges, pillars, and eaves depict various scenes. Common motifs include phoenixes and dragons. Over 30 statues, dating back to the 19th and 20th centuries, adorn the temple grounds. They add another layer of historical and artistic significance to Đền Miếu Trắng. Among the temple’s treasures is a bronze statue. There’s also a collection of porcelain objects from the Thanh dynasty, and a stele inscribed in 1882. The temple’s collection includes several ceremonial objects. These items like palanquins and liturgical fans further illuminate the rich rituals and traditions associated with Đền Miếu Trắng. In recognition of its historical and cultural importance, Đền Miếu Trắng was designated as a historical-cultural relic in 2006. It serves as a living testament to the enduring power of faith and tradition in the heart of Hanoi.
