In 1922 a remarkable journey began. It was a time without streetlights or paved roads just trails. This is the story of the First Union Missionary Baptist Church in Detroit. Mr Alfred White a generous landowner saw a community’s need for unity. He donated land for the church’s first building. This humble structure was just one room made of wood. Kerosene and gas lamps provided light. An iron stove offered warmth. Even drinking water came from a wooden keg and jelly jars. There were no indoor facilities. The church had a large bell though. It rang each Sunday to signal services. It also tolled sadly when a member passed away.
The First Union Missionary Baptist Church’s first pastor was Reverend Samuel Preston Miller. Under his leadership the small wooden church grew. He was followed by Reverend Jumping Jack Williams then Reverend O S Stephenson. Tragedy struck when a nearby house fire destroyed the original building.
The fourth pastor Reverend John Watkins oversaw the construction of a new sturdier church. This was a remarkable feat. The congregation worked tirelessly. They toiled at their jobs during the day and built the church until late at night. Even children pitched in. Reverend Watkins’ leadership inspired this incredible dedication.
Subsequent pastors Reverend Rufus Williamson and Reverend Joseph Thompson each served for 25 years. Their long tenure shows a commitment to the church’s growth. In 1984 Elder C J Long became pastor. He guided the construction of the current church building and the C J Long Fellowship Hall. The congregation paid off the church mortgage in 1998 a testament to their collective efforts.
Several more pastors led First Union Missionary Baptist Church. Each one contributed to the church’s ongoing story. The current pastor Reverend Bruce E Garmon Sr has continued that legacy. He has revitalized ministries and fostered a strong sense of community. The First Union Missionary Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith resilience and the enduring spirit of Detroit. Its history is a captivating tale of perseverance and devotion. It’s a story of community faith and unwavering dedication that continues to inspire.
