After an electrical fire, Greater Good Shepherd Missionary Baptist Church suffered. It destroyed much of the church in South-Central L.A. in 1989. Parishioners thought they had suffered the worst blow. Then, the contractor skipped out with insurance money in 1991. They were far short of funds to finish the work.
Since then, parishioners attended services in the dilapidated skeleton of the church. It was on Florence Avenue. They covered the chairs with plastic when it rained. They piled on jackets when the cold blew in. Thieves took the amplification system. The pastor strained to be heard on Sundays.
The church needed another $80000 to finish construction. Volunteers from the Southern Baptist Convention helped.
