Deep within Glasgow’s Pollock Park, an enigma lies hidden. It’s called the Pollok Earthwork. At first glance, it appears to be a simple ditch encircling a low hilltop, about 30 meters across. Look closer. You’ll see the ghost of an entrance causeway on the east side, marked by a line of kerb stones. The Pollok Earthwork whispers tales of the Iron Age. Excavations in 1959 and 2007 revealed its true age, dispelling earlier theories of a medieval origin. The earth beneath our feet once held a paved and cobbled area within the enclosure. A paved road, remarkably well-preserved, leads eastward from the causeway, stretching at least 15 meters. Imagine the people who walked this path centuries ago. Within the enclosure, a large sandstone pillar, unearthed during excavations, stands as a silent sentinel. The very ground bears the scars of archaeological digs, their outlines still visible. The Pollok Earthwork isn’t just dirt and stones. It’s a time capsule. It offers a glimpse into a community that thrived here during the Iron Age. Although the dense trees of Pollock Park create a tranquil, almost city-forgetting atmosphere, they also obscure some of the secrets this ancient site holds. The Pollok Earthwork continues to intrigue and puzzle. It reminds us that history lies buried beneath our feet, waiting to be discovered and understood.
