“Once a murky cesspool now a sparkling oasis.” That’s the story of Sikandarpur Pond. We are standing before a revitalized waterbody. It reflects a tale of community action and environmental restoration.
Sikandarpur Pond is located near DLF Phase 1 in Gurugram. It was once a picturesque spot. Encroachments and waste turned it into a polluted mess. Sewage flowed in from surrounding areas. The pond became a symbol of neglect.
But the story doesn’t end there. In 2019 a revival project began. The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority GMDA partnered with iamGurgaon. Together they started cleaning the waterbody. They removed encroachments around it. The goal was to restore Sikandarpur Pond to its former glory.
The cleaning process was challenging. One major issue was stopping the sewage flow. Illegal dwellings in Sikanderpur village contributed to the pollution. The team created small ponds to capture water. This helped to arrest the flow of waste into the main pond.
Volunteers and partners worked tirelessly. They cleared invasive water hyacinths. They restored native flora and fauna. The area became a sanctuary for wildlife. Migratory birds started visiting again each year.
The restoration also focused on water management. Stormwater from nearby residential areas now feeds Sikandarpur Pond. This includes DLF Phase 1 and parts of Golf Course Road. A pipeline connects the pond to a waste treatment plant. This ensures that the pond does not dry up.
The project transformed the surrounding area. Walking and cycling tracks were meticulously planned. They offer a safe and enjoyable experience. The walkway was designed using recycled materials. About 500 tonnes of garbage were cleaned. Construction and demolition waste were reused.
Sikandarpur Pond now serves a greater purpose. It provides flood protection for the area. It also acts as a vital groundwater recharge zone. The pond is part of Gurugram’s larger greening strategy.
The revival of Sikandarpur Pond cost less than initially expected. The initial estimate was around Rs 15 crore. The project demonstrates the power of collaboration. Government agencies NGOs and private organizations worked together.
Today Sikandarpur Pond stands as a beacon of hope. It showcases environmental sustainability. It offers a place to escape the city’s hustle and bustle. It reminds us of the importance of preserving our natural resources. This once-polluted pond is now a testament to what can be achieved.
