Did the name Sodom ever cross your mind when you thought of Bayshore Region? Probably not. Bayshore Region, nestled on Long Island’s South Shore, has a history as rich and layered as the sands it borders. It wasn’t always called Bayshore Region. In fact, this vibrant hub has undergone a series of name changes that reflect its evolution. Originally, the Secatogue Native Americans called it Penataquit or Awixa. Early European settlers adopted these names, but in the 19th century, the name was inexplicably changed to Sodom. Imagine that on a postcard! A later shift to Mechanicsville didn’t stick, and a brief return to Penataquit proved too difficult to spell. Finally, in 1868, the name Bayshore Region was adopted, a moniker that evokes the area’s beautiful waterfront location. Bayshore Region’s transformation from a quiet rural hamlet to a bustling resort town began with the arrival of the Long Island Rail Road in 1868. Suddenly, affluent New Yorkers could easily escape the city for the sandy beaches of the Great South Bay and the charming fishing villages of Fire Island. Bayshore Region became a popular weekend and summer getaway. The area flourished, with a booming shopping district and numerous resorts catering to the influx of visitors. During World War I, it even served as the headquarters of the First Yale Unit, a U.S. Naval Air Reserve unit. The post-World War II era saw another surge in Bayshore Region’s population. New housing developments sprang up, attracting working and middle-class families from New York City. Main Street remained a popular shopping destination. Bayshore Region faced challenges in the 1970s and 80s. Rezoning led to increased density and a shift in demographics, as businesses and multi-family dwellings replaced single-family homes. Main Street struggled with vacancies, and the opening of the South Shore Mall drew shoppers away from local businesses. However, efforts to revitalize Bayshore Region have been ongoing since the 1980s. The redevelopment of Main Street, with its new sidewalks, antique-style streetlights, and restored parks, has brought back much of its former charm. New restaurants, boutiques, and other businesses have breathed life back into the area. Today, Bayshore Region stands as a testament to its resilient spirit, a place where history and modernity intertwine. From its intriguing past to its vibrant present, Bayshore Region offers visitors a unique glimpse into the heart of Long Island.
