Established in 947 AD, Kitano Tenman Shrine is more than just a beautiful landmark. It’s a story whispered across centuries. Kitano Tenman Shrine is dedicated to the spirit of Sugawara no Michizane. He was a scholar, poet, and politician during the Heian period. Michizane’s life took a dark turn when political rivals exiled him to Dazaifu. He died there two years later. After his death, Kyoto was plagued by disasters. These were attributed to Michizane’s vengeful spirit. The Kitano Tenman Shrine was built to appease him. This marked a unique event. Michizane was the first historical figure deified in Japan, becoming known as Tenjin, the god of learning. Kitano Tenman Shrine isn’t just a place of worship. It is a living museum. The shrine’s architecture is a testament to its rich history. The main hall and gates, dating back to 1607, showcase the grandeur of the Momoyama period. They are designated as National Treasures. The shrine grounds are adorned with over 1,500 plum trees. These were Michizane’s favorite. Every February 25th, the shrine hosts the Plum Blossom Festival (Baikasai). This commemorates Michizane’s death. During the festival, visitors can enjoy an outdoor tea ceremony. Geiko and maiko from the nearby Kamishichiken district serve tea. Another unique feature is the presence of ox statues. These are considered Tenjin’s sacred messengers. Legend says an ox pulling Michizane’s funeral procession stopped. It refused to move, indicating his desired burial spot. Visitors rub these statues for good luck. Kitano Tenman Shrine also hosts a monthly flea market on the 25th. This bustling market, known as Tenjin-san, offers a variety of goods. Kitano Tenman Shrine is more than a shrine. It is a place where history, spirituality, and culture intertwine.
