How many clocks does it take to tell the true time? Here at the Zeitfeld Installation, the answer is a resounding twenty-four. You’re standing before a striking art piece, a field of time, conceived by the German artist Klaus Rinke. It was 1987 when the Zeitfeld Installation first ticked into existence, gracing Düsseldorf as part of the Bundesgartenschau, a renowned national garden exhibition.

The installation is more than just a collection of clocks. Each of the twenty-four station clocks, mounted on towering six-meter steel columns, is synchronized with the ultra-precise Braunschweig atomic clock. They all tell the exact same time. But here’s the catch: you can never truly capture all of them at once. Your eye, moving from one clock face to another, experiences the relentless passage of time. The artist, Klaus Rinke, is no stranger to the concept of time. The son of a freight train loadmaster, he spent his childhood surrounded by the imposing clocks of train stations. He saw them not just as tools of schedule but as poignant symbols of life’s fleeting journey.

The Zeitfeld Installation is a testament to that very journey. It’s a visual reminder that time waits for no one, a concept universally understood yet rarely felt as acutely as when standing in the presence of this installation. So, take a moment, let the rhythmic ticking wash over you and contemplate the passage of time in the heart of the Zeitfeld.
