In 1928, a unique vision took shape on Avenue Louise. This vision became the Maison Périer – Huis Périer. Commissioned by the amateur painter Gaston Périer, this modernist marvel was designed by architect Paul Bonduelle. Maison Périer – Huis Périer’s brick facade exudes a radical simplicity. Five levels rise upwards, the topmost acting as an attic. Three vertical bays punctuate the upper floors. A rounded projection on the ground floor houses the entrance porch. It leads to a terrace above. Although the garage door and window frames have been replaced, they don’t detract from the building’s original charm. Step inside Maison Périer – Huis Périer, and you’ll find the same simplicity reflected in the interior. The floors are interconnected like mezzanines, creating a flowing space. The true treasures of Maison Périer – Huis Périer lie within its grand reception room and the mezzanine above. Here, between 1954 and 1956, painters Paul Delvaux and Emile Salkin created breathtaking murals. These oil paintings depict illusionistic and surrealist scenes within a decor inspired by antiquity. Look for “The Banquet of the Wise Men”, “Allegory of Music”, and a portrait of Gilbert Périer and his family. These murals, the salon, and the staircase were protected as a heritage site on March 27, 1997. The murals at Maison Périer – Huis Périer have even been compared to the Sistine Chapel, a testament to their artistic power.
