Consider the bright neon lights. They beckon you closer to the Alex Theatre. This Glendale landmark has been a beacon of arts and culture since 1925.

The Alex Theatre began its life as the Alexander Theatre. Claude L. Langley, owner of West Coast Theatres, named it after his son, Alexander Langley. The theater quickly became a favorite spot. Walt Disney himself would preview his cartoons here. He wanted to see how they played with audiences.

Imagine stepping back in time. It is the golden age of Hollywood. Celebrities like Elizabeth Taylor and Bing Crosby graced the Alex Theatre. They attended preview screenings of their films. “National Velvet” and “Going My Way” both premiered here.

Originally, the Alex Theatre boasted a magnificent Wurlitzer pipe organ. A live organist accompanied silent films. This added to the magic of the movie-going experience. The theater was more than just a place to watch a movie. It was a complete entertainment experience.

In 1940, architect S. Charles Lee transformed the Alex Theatre. He gave it a striking Art Deco design. A 100-foot tower with neon lights became its signature. The theater’s name was shortened to Alex to fit the new marquee.

The Alex Theatre has seen its share of drama. A backstage fire in 1948 caused significant damage. But the theater was resilient. It reopened with a grand celebration. The renovation included new lighting and draperies.

Throughout the 1950s, the Alex Theatre screened blockbuster films. “Ben-Hur” and “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” drew huge crowds. A wide screen and surround sound enhanced the viewing experience.

In 1993, the Alex underwent a major renovation. The original wall paintings and decorations were restored. Today, the Alex Theatre hosts a diverse range of events. These include concerts, theater, dance and film screenings.

The Alex Theatre continues to be a vibrant part of Glendale. It hosts over 250 events each year. More than 100,000 patrons pass through its doors annually. It has even hosted the finale of “RuPaul’s Drag Race”. The Alex is also a favorite venue for the comedy series “Bring the Funny.”

The Alex Theatre’s legacy extends beyond entertainment. It is home to resident companies like the Glendale Youth Orchestra. The Alex Film Society also calls it home. The Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra performs here too.

The Alex Theatre stands as a testament to Glendale’s cultural heritage. From its early days as a movie palace to its current role as a performing arts center, it has captivated audiences for generations. The Alex Theatre is more than just a building. It is a living piece of history. It is a place where memories are made and stories come to life.
