This magnificent building at 500 Pearl Street in Foley Square is more than just a courthouse. It’s a symbol of American justice a testament to the tireless efforts of Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan. He championed its construction. The building stands as a tribute to his legacy.

Construction began on March 29 1991. The courthouse opened its doors in 1996. Its 27 stories house 44 courtrooms. It’s the second largest federal courthouse in the United States. That’s quite a claim to fame. It provides court support and administrative services. The United States Marshals Service and the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York use it.

The architectural firm Kohn Pedersen Fox designed the building. It’s a stunning blend of granite marble and oak. Inside you’ll find public art by renowned artists Raymond Kaskey and Maya Lin. Their works add a touch of beauty and thought-provoking elements to the building. The courthouse also houses an exhibition “New York’s Moynihan” which explores the life and career of the Senator.
