Gazing up at those twin towers, can you imagine the story of resilience and rebirth that defines St. Agnes Church? The parish of St. Agnes Church was established in 1873. It served the Italian laborers building the new Grand Central Depot.

Rev. Harry Cummings Macdowell sought to serve the local Catholic residents. He rented a hall above Croton Market. The hall stood on 42nd Street. Macdowell distributed handbills to announce services in the temporary chapel. By 1893, the parish had grown. A Sunday school became a parish school on 44th Street.

Lawrence J. O’Connor designed the original St. Agnes Church. Construction spanned from 1873 to 1877. The basement served as a chapel after its completion. John Cardinal McCloskey dedicated it in January 1874. Three years later, in May 1877, Cardinal McCloskey dedicated the completed St. Agnes Church.

The church faced adversity. A fire badly damaged St. Agnes Church on Christmas Eve in 1898. Only the towers remained standing. But the parish was determined to rebuild.

In 1904, a four-story rectory and sacristy was added. Jeremiah O’Rourke & Sons designed it. The cost was $31,000.

St. Agnes Church became a media hub. Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen broadcast his radio and television programs from here. These broadcasts significantly influenced American attitudes toward Catholicism. John Cardinal O’Connor even led an anti-abortion march from St. Agnes Church.

Tragedy struck again. On December 10, 1992, another devastating fire destroyed St. Agnes Church. This time only the outer walls and towers survived. Demolition and rebuilding costs totaled $8 million.

But from the ashes, a new St. Agnes Church arose. Acheson, Thornton, Doyle designed the rebuilt church. The design drew inspiration from the Church of the Gesù in Rome. The original towers were retained. They flank the new Italianate building. The new St. Agnes Church opened in 1998.

Look closely at the altar triptych. Sean Delonas painted it. Notice the blend of tradition and renewal.

The story of St. Agnes Church is one of faith. It is a story of community. It is a story of architectural adaptation. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of New York City.
