Three identical figures facing each other. These are the Drei Frauen. The Three Women sculpture embodies artistic grace.

Hello everyone. I am excited to share the story of the Drei Frauen with you. This sculpture is not just a piece of art. It is a symbol of femininity and artistic expression nestled here in this green space.

Carin Kreuzberg, a talented sculptor, designed the Drei Frauen in 1979. However, it was not until 1993 that the sculpture found its home here. The location is between Elisabethweg and the Panke. The park itself has an interesting history. It was created around 1951 after the Second World War. This was when Schlosses Schöenhausen was renovated as the official seat for the President of the German Democratic Republic. The installation of the Drei Frauen was part of a landscape redesign. This enhanced the green space along the Panke.

The Drei Frauen features three life-size female figures. They are crafted in a similar style. These figures stand facing one another. Together they form a circle. This arrangement evokes the classical theme of the “Three Graces”. Each figure stands on its own plinth. These uniquely shaped plinths are mounted on a shared concrete slab. The slab is set into the ground.

These figures are slender and tall. They display what some critics have called a tight form. They have flowing contours. Their expressions are deeply internalized. The women’s torsos are nude. The bodies are static almost frozen in time. Jürgen Tomisch noted this quality in his description.

If you look closely at the Drei Frauen, you might notice the artist’s signature. The inscription “C. Kreuzberg” is on the plinth of one of the figures. The sculptures are made of bronze while the base is made of concrete. The pieces were cast and then bolted together.

In May 2023, Birgit Szepanski created a performance. It involved movement and language. This performance highlighted the sculpture’s feminist context. Szepanski explored the visibility and invisibility of women in urban spaces.

The Drei Frauen by Carin Kreuzberg is more than just a sculpture. It invites us to reflect on femininity, art, and the urban environment. It stands as a testament to Kreuzberg’s artistic vision.
