Twenty-five glowing eyes stare back at you. Welcome to F.I.S.H.
This isn’t just any collection of sculptures. F.I.S.H. is a unique art installation. It’s the brainchild of artist Donald Lipski. He created this underwater scene under the I-35 overpass. The location is near the San Antonio River and Camden Street.
Each of these seven-foot fiberglass fish is a long-eared sunfish. They are anatomically correct. Lipski hand-painted each one. At night they are brilliantly lit from within. Thousands of tiny LED lights illuminate each fish. The effect is magical. It transforms the space under the overpass into a shimmering underwater world.
The project was part of San Antonio’s expansion of the River Walk. The city extended the River Walk eight miles. F.I.S.H. became an instant landmark. People gather nightly to watch the “lighting of the fish”. One extra fish resides at The DoSeum a children’s museum.
