“Did the earth truly swallow this place whole?” a young boy whispered, clinging to his mother’s hand as they stood before the Ruins of La Recolecciόn. His question echoes the awe that grips every visitor to this sprawling testament to time and nature’s power. The Ruins of La Recolecciόn, once a magnificent testament to faith and architectural grandeur, now stand as a haunting reminder of Antigua’s turbulent past. Originally built between 1701 and 1717 by the Recollects, a French branch of the Franciscan order, the church and monastery were intended to be a beacon of spirituality in the heart of the city. The Ruins of La Recolecciόn church, upon its completion, was one of the largest in Antigua. Imagine the grandeur of this place: cloisters bustling with the quiet murmur of prayers, a library filled with the wisdom of ages, an infirmary offering solace to the sick. Just months after its inauguration in 1717, disaster struck. The earth quaked, damaging the newly built church and cloisters. The resilient Recollects repaired the damage, and by 1740, the monastery housed 35 friars. Yet, the respite was short-lived. The earth roared again in 1751, and then with devastating force in 1773 during the Santa Marta earthquakes. The Ruins of La Recolecciόn were ravaged. The church’s base wall crumbled, the presbytery and crossing collapsed, and the aisles, choir, and upper levels were rendered unusable. But the story doesn’t end there. The Ruins of La Recolecciόn faced further indignities. Over the years, scavengers picked at its bones. The remnants served as a stable, a soap factory, and even a sports complex. Stones were pilfered for other constructions, each theft chipping away at the memory of the once-proud monastery. Today, the ruins stand embraced by parkland, a protected national monument. Massive chunks of masonry lie scattered within the church’s shell, a stark contrast to the serene green surrounding them. While you can wander through the exposed cloisters and imagine the lives once lived within these walls, the catacombs remain closed, their secrets guarded from prying eyes. Even in ruins, the Ruins of La Recolecciόn retain a strange beauty. The skeletal frame of the grand arched doorway reaches towards the sky, a poignant reminder of the grandeur that once was. The scene even caught the eye of Hollywood. The opening earthquake scenes of the 1982 film “The Border,” starring Jack Nicholson, were filmed within these very ruins. As you stand here, amidst the stones and shadows, you become a part of the continuing story of the Ruins of La Recolecciόn, a story of faith, destruction, resilience, and remembrance.
