High above the Duomo’s bustling square stands the Madonnina di Pio XI. This isn’t just any statue. It’s a symbol of Milan itself. The Madonnina a golden Virgin Mary graces the highest point of Milan Cathedral.

For centuries the Madonnina has watched over the city. Giuseppe Perego sculpted her in 1774. He was commissioned by the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo. They chose his design from several models. Giuseppe Antignati then carved a life-size wooden model. This was used as a base for the final gilded copper statue.

The Madonnina isn’t just beautiful. She’s incredibly tall. Standing at 4.16 meters she sits atop the main spire 108 meters high. The statue is made of 33 gilded and embossed copper plates. These plates were carefully attached to the wooden model. Anton Raphael Mengs gilded the copper plates adding to the statue’s splendor.

Originally the Madonnina had an iron framework. Giovan Battista Varino created this framework in 1773. It was replaced in 1967 during restoration. A stainless steel framework now supports the precious statue. The original iron framework is in the Duomo Museum. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the Madonnina’s construction.

The Madonnina is more than just a beautiful statue. She’s a source of pride for the Milanese. A tradition holds that no building in Milan can be taller than the Madonnina. This has led to the creation of smaller replicas. These copies adorn the city’s tallest buildings. They ensure that the Madonnina remains the highest point in Milan.

The Madonnina embodies Milan’s spirit. She is a testament to faith artistry and tradition. She stands as a guardian a symbol of the city’s enduring charm. Looking up at her you feel connected to Milan’s rich history. A sense of awe and wonder fills you. A sense of the enduring legacy of faith and hope.
