The Wyly Martin Plaque commemorates a life intertwined with both the War of 1812 and the Texas Revolution. Wyly Martin, born in Georgia in 1776, led a multifaceted life. He served as a scout for General William Henry Harrison and fought under General Andrew Jackson at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend during the War of 1812. His military career continued as he rose through the ranks to captain. He later resigned, allegedly due to a duel. He arrived in Texas in 1825 and became the alcalde, a kind of mayor, of Stephen F. Austin’s colony. The Wyly Martin Plaque tells us he served as a delegate to the conventions of 1832, 1833, and 1835. Interestingly, Martin initially belonged to the “Peace Party” and opposed Texan independence from Mexico. However, as the Texas Revolution gained momentum, he signed the declaration of war against Santa Anna’s Centralist regime. At Bexar, he even sketched William B. Travis, the only known portrait from life. Martin raised a company and joined Sam Houston’s army. He was promoted to major but later resigned his command due to disagreements over strategy. After Texas gained independence, he served as chief justice of Fort Bend County and as a representative in the Texas Congress.
