From this spot the Staatsratsgebäude commands respect. Its imposing presence speaks volumes. It’s more than just a building. It’s a tangible piece of Berlin’s complex history.

The Staatsratsgebäude stands proudly on Schlossplatz. It served as the official seat of the East German State Council from 1964 to 1990. This imposing structure was the first new government building in the city center after World War II. Designed by Roland Korn and Hans Erich Bogatzky it’s a prime example of modern architecture. Notice the grey sandstone and red rhyolite cladding.

A fascinating detail is the integration of the historical Portal IV. This baroque portal originally belonged to the Berlin Palace. The palace was destroyed in 1950. However Portal IV was saved. Why? It is said that Karl Liebknecht proclaimed the “Free Socialist Republic of Germany” from its balcony in 1918. The DDR regime cleverly incorporated this symbol into the Staatsratsgebäude. It became a powerful piece of propaganda a visual link to the socialist revolution.

The interior was designed to impress. The building features a grand staircase with stained glass. There are spacious foyers and large halls. These served for state banquets and receptions. The offices of the State Council’s six deputies were on the ground floor. Walter Ulbricht’s office was on the first floor along with the main meeting room. The second floor held a grand ballroom a state banquet hall and a clubroom.

The building boasted impressive artwork and craftsmanship. A large glass mural by Walter Womacka depicts the history of the German workers’ movement. A porcelain frieze designed by Günther Brendel adorned the banquet hall. It showed scenes of life in the GDR. Even the furniture was specially designed. It showcased the craftsmanship of the Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau and VEB Edelholzbau Berlin.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall the building served various purposes. It briefly housed the German Federal Chancellor’s office. Since 2006 the European School of Management and Technology ESMT Berlin has made it their home. The building has undergone renovations. Yet many of the original features like the Womacka mural remain. They stand as reminders of a bygone era and a fascinating chapter in Berlin’s history. This impressive building continues to play a significant role in shaping the city’s future. Look at the Staatsratsgebäude. It has much to tell.
