“The origin of Friande is rather whimsical, isn’t it?” I ask, tilting my head towards the rustic stone houses that line the village square. The Friande is a small village in the north of Portugal, in fact, the birthplace of the River Sousa. ” Legend has it that a lone traveler called Feriande settled here, back in the 12th century. He was drawn to the fertile valley. Feriande dedicated himself to tending the land and eventually started a small farm. Because his name was associated with the village, it became known as Friande. The name, however, is thought to be more a twist of the word “frio”, cold, which may have been used to describe the water of the river or the climate of the village.

The village sits at the cusp of the Tu00e2mega River Valley, a region known for its rolling hills and fertile lands. The Friande is a peaceful haven, a place that beckons you to slow down and soak in the serenity. It has a peaceful quality, a sense of history and tranquility that permeates every corner of the village. It’s the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the big cities. Over the years, the village has developed several attractions for travelers.

There’s a church dedicated to Saint Andrew, the original chapel dates back to 1176. But what truly makes Friande special is the spring of the River Sousa, which can be found near the heart of the village. The spring symbolizes the lifeblood of the region. This river is truly beautiful, its waters sparkling clear and cool. Waterfalls cascade and are home to a variety of fish and wildlife. It is a true spectacle and a reminder of the purity of nature in a world that is becoming increasingly polluted.

But the Friande is not only a beautiful place, it’s imbued with history. The Roman road, which used to lead up to the village, is evidence of the historical significance of this location. The village is steeped in history and culture and is a testament to the resilience of its people. Walking through its streets, you’ll find yourself transported back to another era to the days when simple living and farming were the heart of life in the village. Just imagine the village centuries ago, a bustling center of activity, with farmers coming together to market their goods. The scent of freshly baked bread wafting through the air, and the sound of laughter and conversation filling the air. This small village, the River Sousa and the church with its history and beauty, reminds us of the enduring charm of simple things!”
