Did you know that this very spot. This Veterans Plaza. Was once a bustling roadway? A place where Dutch sailors navigated the waters centuries ago. It’s hard to imagine now isn’t it? Surrounded by modern skyscrapers this quiet space holds a rich history. Vietnam Veterans Plaza is more than just a park. It’s a memorial a place of remembrance. It honors the brave New York City citizens who served in the Vietnam War.

This trapezoidal patch of land was originally Coenties Slip. Filled in 1835 it later became Jeannette Park. Named after the ill-fated Jeannette expedition. Imagine the transformation. From a busy waterway to a tranquil garden. Horticulturist Samuel Parsons even designed the original gardens in 1886.

Over time the park changed. Robert Moses redesigned it. Adding horseshoe pitches and various courts. Then Paul Friedberg added an amphitheater fountain. The area around 55 Water Street was constantly evolving. Reflecting the changing city around it.

In 1982 plans shifted dramatically. The city decided to dedicate this space to Vietnam veterans. Architects Peter Wormser William Fellows and writer Joseph Ferrandino won a design competition. Donald Trump even co-chaired the commission raising millions for the memorial. Jeannette Park was officially renamed Vietnam Veterans Plaza on July 20 1983.

The plaza was dedicated in 1985. Honoring the 1741 New York City residents who died in the Vietnam War. Also the 250000 men and women who served. The memorial wall. Inspired by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC. Was initially planned to be made of glass blocks.

After the September 11th attacks the plaza underwent a major restoration. It reopened in 2001 with a new ceremonial entrance. A black granite fountain was added. The Walk of Honor now displays the names of all 1741 fallen soldiers. A poignant reminder of sacrifice.

Today Vietnam Veterans Plaza stands as a powerful symbol. It’s a place of reflection remembrance and honor. It showcases the enduring spirit of those who served. A quiet sanctuary within the vibrant energy of Lower Manhattan. A place that deserves your respect and contemplation.
