In 1831, a beacon of knowledge emerged from the dust of a newly independent Greece. Right here, at Thoukididou 9 in Plaka, the Hill Memorial School, originally known as Hill School, opened its doors. John Henry and Frances Maria Hill, American missionaries, envisioned a place where young minds could flourish. The Hill Memorial School quickly became a haven for children eager to learn. Initially, it was housed in a Turkish tower near the Temple of the Winds. But in 1834, the same year Athens became the capital, the school moved to this very spot. A new building was constructed at the crossroads of N. Nikodimou and Thoukididou Streets, specifically designed for this innovative educational institution. A century later, yet another new structure replaced it – the one you see before you today. The Hill Memorial School was groundbreaking. It was one of the first schools in Greece to offer kindergarten education, teacher training, and education for girls. Imagine young Elisavet Contaxaki, a student at the Hill Memorial School in the early days. She lived with the Hills and later became Dr. Hill’s assistant and a teacher at the school. She went on to play a role in the Cretan counter-revolutionary movement. By 1834, the Greek authorities recognized the school’s importance. King Otho himself suggested it include teacher training for girls. A boarding school followed a few years later, and the school attracted some of Athens’ wealthiest families. Mrs. Hill oversaw it all: the infant school for four to eight-year-olds, the girls’ primary school, an industrial training school teaching sewing and domestic skills, and the normal school. Another remarkable student, Sevasti Kallisperi, attended the school in the 1880s. She would later become the first Greek woman to graduate from a university. The Hill Memorial School continued to evolve. In 1869, Mrs. Hill reopened the normal school as the Hill Institute, operating it privately alongside the other programs. The legacy continued through generations of the Hill family, shaping young minds for almost two centuries. Even today, the fifth and sixth generations of the Hill family continue to guide this institution. The Hill Memorial School stands as a testament to the enduring power of education, a place where history and learning intertwine, right here in the heart of Plaka.
