Born from a divine conviction in 1971 New Mt. Moriah Baptist Church found its humble beginnings. Reverend Marvell Williams felt God’s call. He sought to establish a new church. There was no building. A rented space at 1709 West Roosevelt Road became their first sanctuary. It needed significant repairs. The church’s early years were marked by incredible dedication. Roy Lee Williams chaired the Deacon Board. Reverend Robert Williams who later became pastor led the congregation.
This wasn’t just a place of worship. It was a vibrant community hub. A gospel choir formed in March 1971. Vertlee Williams Lorene Williams Olevia Thomas and Bennie Williams spearheaded this musical endeavor. An Usher Board followed in June. Erma Williams and Versie Martin took the lead. The Pastor’s Aide Board soon joined. Clara Williams Beatrice Sanders and Nora Martin were the initial members. Their first revival in August 1971 brought fifteen baptismal candidates. These individuals joined the church family in November. A Junior Choir was also established. Many of their descendants remain active members today.
Growth propelled New Mt. Moriah to a larger space in 1984. They moved to 1501 North Harding eventually purchasing the property. The church wasn’t just a spiritual home. It provided vital community services. A daycare operated from 1984 to 1989. A Head Start program ran from 1989 to 2013. The church even expanded its reach through television ministry from 2000 to 2011. All this happened under Pastor Marvell Williams’s visionary leadership.
Reverend Robert Williams succeeded Pastor Marvell Williams in 2013. He continues the church’s legacy. New Mt. Moriah Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith perseverance and community. Its story resonates with the spirit of Detroit. Its impact is felt far beyond its walls. The church’s journey reflects a deep commitment to its mission. It serves as a beacon of hope for generations.
