Have you ever wondered what bamboo and silver could create? At Saint Philip’s Episcopal Church in Lemon Grove, a simple cross made from these materials symbolizes the church’s humble beginnings. Saint Philip’s was founded in 1950 by Mary Ester Ray. The first services were held in her living room, just across the street from where this beautiful church now stands. That original bamboo and silver cross, a testament to Mrs. Ray’s dedication, is still displayed in the Parish Hall named in her honor. The current church building has a fascinating history of its own. Originally built in 1887 in downtown San Diego, it served as St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. The lumber used in its construction even included some from a shipment intended for the Hotel del Coronado. In 1948, St. Paul’s outgrew the building and it was moved to San Diego State University, becoming St. Dunstan’s College Chapel. Two decades later, facing demolition, the church found a new home and a new purpose here in Lemon Grove. In 1970, thanks to the fundraising efforts of the Saint Philip’s congregation, the building was moved in nine sections and meticulously restored. It was then rededicated as Saint Philip the Apostle Episcopal Church. Tragedy struck in 1972 when a fire gutted the interior. Yet, the resilient congregation, led by Rev. Kenneth Johnson, rallied once more. They rebuilt their beloved church, showcasing their dedication and the enduring spirit of Saint Philip’s. The church we see today, with its Victorian Gothic Revival architecture, stands as a testament to the unwavering faith and commitment of its congregation. From a small gathering in a living room to a vibrant community, Saint Philip’s continues to serve Lemon Grove, offering services in both English and Spanish, embracing its rich history while looking towards the future.
