Isn’t it curious how a small shrine can hold so much history? Right here in Kyoto’s Kazahaya-cho stands the Hokoson Tenmangu. Some call it Kason Tenmangu. This unassuming spot has a story that stretches back centuries.

Once upon a time, this area was home to Aigyo Shrine. Locals revered it as the “shrine to stop fire”. Then something changed. In the early Meiji era, the Fujiwara Hokke Hokke family of Kazahaya built a residence. They enshrined a statue of Sugawara no Michizane within their property.

This marked a turning point. The area became known as Kazahaya-cho. Over time, Aigyo Shrine became known as Hokoson Tenmangu. The small shrine of Hokoson Tenmangu is nestled among the townhouses on the north side of Kazahaya-cho. It is cherished by the community.

Let’s delve deeper into its deities. Hokoson Tenmangu venerates Homusubi. He is the god of fire. It also enshrines Sugawara no Michizane. He is the deity of learning. The combination is interesting.

The story of Homusubi is dramatic. According to the ancient Kojiki chronicles, his birth caused his mother’s death. She was Izanami. Izanagi then killed Homusubi. From Homusubi’s blood sprang forth many deities.

One of these deities was Hihoko Hihode. He is also known as Kaga Kagatsuchi. Hihoko Hihode is an ancestor of Emperor Jinmu. Emperor Jinmu was the first emperor of Japan. The connection to fire is profound in Japanese mythology.

The tale of Sugawara no Michizane adds another layer. He was a scholar and poet. Wrongfully exiled, he died in disgrace. Disasters followed the Imperial Court after his death. People believed his vengeful spirit caused them. To appease him, he was deified as Tenjin. Tenjin is now the patron of students.

So, as you stand before Hokoson Tenmangu think of fire and learning. Think of ancient gods and exiled scholars. This small shrine embodies a rich tapestry of Japanese history and belief. Its story continues to evolve with each passing year. Hokoson Tenmangu stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and tradition.
