Igreja de Cústóias

Gazing upon Igreja de Cústoias, it’s hard to believe this serene sanctuary replaced a crumbling church. The original Igreja de Cústoias, a smaller structure, was deemed beyond repair in the early 18th century. It was demolished to make way for the church we see today. Interestingly, Igreja de Cústoias isn’t located in the main square as was customary. Instead, it sits off the beaten path. A walkway leads from Largo do Souto to this almost hidden gem. The church we now admire exhibits a Baroque style with later 19th-century modifications. This includes the single bell tower which replaced the original towers. Above the entrance, a statue of Saint James, the parish’s patron saint, welcomes worshippers. Inside Igreja de Cústoias, the Baroque style continues with stunning gilded woodwork. In the main altar, polychrome wooden statues of Saint Gonçalo and Saint James stand prominently. Funded by the Baliagem, the main chapel was completed in 1733. Between 1880 and 1898, further enhancements were made. An altar was added to house the revered image of Nossa Senhora de S. Gens, also known as Nossa Senhora da Nazaré. This statue was relocated from the old chapel atop S. Gens hill. Two beautifully painted angel statues flank the main altar, serving as torchbearers. The right side altar, also adorned with gilded woodwork, is dedicated to Nosso Senhor do Aflitos. An urn containing the image of Senhor Morto rests in front of the altar. The left side altar, similarly crafted, honors Nossa Senhora de Fátima. In the right side chapel, a statue of Saint Sebastian stands. Before leaving, look up to admire the main chapel’s ceiling. It’s decorated with painted wooden panels depicting biblical scenes. Outside in the churchyard, several funerary chapels remain as remnants of the old cemetery. They serve as silent witnesses to the passage of time and the enduring presence of Igreja de Cústoias.
