Picture a temple nestled in Higashiyama Kyoto. This is Tsukibano-do Temple. Its beauty is captivating. Its history is rich.

Tsukibano-do Temple is a Buddhist temple. It’s part of the Shingon sect. It stands in the Fushimi ward. The temple has a deep connection to the powerful statesman Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

Legend says Hideyoshi admired the moon viewed from the nearby Tsukibano. He renamed a temple there. The original temple was called Jinen-ji Temple. It stood on the site of the current Tsukibano-do. Hideyoshi’s deep respect for the moon influenced the name change. He chose Tsukibano-do. The name means “Temple of the Moon Bridge”.

The area surrounding Tsukibano-do is steeped in history. Ancient buildings still stand. One is the striking Kamo-gawa River bridge. It’s visible from the temple. This bridge is also known as the “Hideyoshi Bridge”. It has a special story. Hideyoshi’s friends helped him build it. The bridge helped connect the city to the Kamo River.

During the turbulent Momoyama period the temple was destroyed. It was rebuilt later in 1873. This reconstruction gave the temple its current form. The temple continues to attract visitors. They come to experience its peaceful atmosphere.

The temple’s name has different meanings. “Moon Bridge Temple” suggests peace. It also refers to the four moons reflecting in the water. These moons refer to sky river pond and field.

Today Tsukibano-do Temple stands proudly. Its quiet beauty contrasts with the bustling city. Visit the temple. Experience its history. Feel Hideyoshi’s legacy. Find peace in this moonlit sanctuary.
