Hidden amongst the charming streets of Azurara stands the Capela do Mártir São Sebastião. Its unassuming exterior belies a rich history woven into the very stones.

This humble chapel boasts a fascinating blend of architectural styles. Gothic Baroque and Neoclassical elements intertwine creating a unique visual tapestry. It perches atop a rocky outcrop a raised platform at the corner of Rua da Junqueira and Rua de São Sebastião. A walled forecourt or adro completes the picture a stone cross standing sentinel at one corner.

The chapel’s longitudinal plan features a single nave and a rectangular chancel. The interior is simple whitewashed walls offering a calming contrast to the ornate details to come. Wooden ceilings and a masseira roof provide shelter. The chancel’s back wall however is a masterpiece. A polychrome altarpiece in blue and white adorned with gold detailing commands attention. It’s a striking piece of religious art.

Records indicate the chapel’s existence as early as the 14th or 15th centuries. A mention in the Livro das Visitas of 1567 confirms its antiquity. Yet the building incorporates later additions notably from the 18th and 19th centuries reflecting the passage of time and changing tastes.

Father Serafim das Neves described it in his 1965 work Azurara: Breve notícia histórica e etnográfica. He noted its great age its granite plinth and its ogival side door. He also highlighted its charming setting near the site of ancient salt pans a fascinating detail hinting at the area’s past.

The Capela do Mártir São Sebastião is more than just a building. It is a testament to the enduring faith of the community. It is a living link to centuries past. It is a silent observer of the ebb and flow of life in Azurara. It is a captivating place of worship that deserves your time and attention. Take a moment to appreciate its beauty and reflect on its long and rich history. Its enduring presence whispers tales of devotion resilience and the lasting power of faith.
