“What’s in a name?” a traveler once mused, standing before Nhà thờ Giáo xứ Ba Đông. “Sometimes, everything.” Nhà thờ Giáo xứ Ba Đông, or Ba Dong Church, as it’s sometimes called, carries a name whispered with reverence by its 1,500 parishioners. They know the name signifies more than just a building. It represents a shared history, a spiritual anchor, and a testament to unwavering faith. The story of Nhà thờ Giáo xứ Ba Đông begins in 1954. Displaced parishioners from Hai Phong diocese, along with the wider community, sought solace in a new land. They settled near plot number 6 in Hố Nai, Biên Hòa. Father Gioakim Nguyễn Hữu Phác guided them, establishing the first rudimentary structure for worship. It was a humble beginning, a temporary sanctuary, but it was enough. Five years later, Father Đaminh Nguyễn Hữu Khoát continued the work. A new church arose, a tangible symbol of their growing community. In 1965, Father Giuse Nguyễn Đức Cẩn arrived from Sóc Trăng to lead the flock. Years passed, and the church thrived. In 1985, Father Gioan Baotixita Nguyễn Văn Bình took over. Then, in 1998, Father Giuse Nguyễn Ý Định provided pastoral care. A year later, Father Đaminh Nguyễn Văn Tòng arrived, embarking on an ambitious project to construct the new church we see today. This modern Nhà thờ Giáo xứ Ba Đông was consecrated in 2003, its adjacent mortuary completed in 2007. The church continues to flourish under Father Giuse Đinh Đại Long, who assumed leadership in 2016. The daily mass schedule is a testament to the vibrant faith within. The church doors open for services at 5:30 am and 6:00 pm, offering a rhythm of prayer that anchors the day. Nhà thờ Giáo xứ Ba Đông has witnessed a remarkable growth in its community. From its humble beginnings in 1954 with 320 families, it has grown to embrace 342 families. This reflects not just an increase in numbers but a deepening of faith across generations. So, as you stand before Nhà thờ Giáo xứ Ba Đông, remember its name. It’s more than just an identifier. It’s a story etched in brick and mortar, whispered in prayer, and lived in the hearts of its community.
