Founded in 1926 as the Original Solid Rock Baptist Church this is New Hope Baptist Church. It began at 2715 Washington Avenue. The church later relocated to its current location at 1807 Rev John Raphael Jr Way formerly LaSalle Street. This move happened in 1965. The name changed to New Hope Baptist Church in 1930. This was guided by the Holy Spirit.
Rev Freddie H Dunn led New Hope from 1952. His leadership spurred immense growth. The congregation outgrew its building. Pastor Dunn had a vision. He wanted an educational building. This was completed in 1985. Three years later in 1988 Pastor Dunn passed away. Rev John C Raphael became the new pastor. Under his guidance New Hope flourished. New ministries and programs emerged. He served faithfully for 25 years. Then in 2013 the Lord called him home.
Rev Jamaal Weathersby took over as pastor in July 2013. His mission is to empower believers. He seeks to expand God’s kingdom. New Hope remains a vital part of the Central City community. It continues to be a beacon throughout New Orleans. This church’s history is a testament to faith. It shows resilience and growth. It’s a testament to the unwavering spirit of its congregation.
