Hidden amongst the towering trees stands the Rustic Canyon Recreation Center. Its Spanish Colonial Revival architecture whispers tales of a bygone era. This isn’t just a recreation center. It’s a living legacy.

The Rustic Canyon Recreation Center wasn’t always a public space. It began as the exclusive clubhouse for the Uplifters Club. Imagine a group of wealthy and influential men. They included Hollywood stars Will Rogers and Harold Lloyd. Even L Frank Baum the author of the Oz books was a member. Their gatherings were legendary. They called their parties “Hijinx”. These were wild affairs with plays and revelry. The parties satirized high society. They were famous for their outrageous antics.

The original clubhouse burned down. A larger clubhouse was built in its place. The Uplifters added tennis courts a pool stables and a polo field. The grounds even hosted an outdoor amphitheater. The Uplifters created a weekend getaway. They built rustic retreats and cottages for their members.

Over time the Uplifters sold their land. An anonymous philanthropist saved the remaining property. In 1953 they donated it to the City of Los Angeles. Today the Rustic Canyon Recreation Center offers a multitude of activities. You can take fitness classes or art classes. You can enjoy basketball tennis or pickleball. The center still maintains its unique charm.

Walk the grounds and you can almost hear the echoes of laughter. The ghosts of the Uplifters seem to linger. Their legacy lives on in the Rustic Canyon Recreation Center. It stands as a testament to their unique blend of creativity and camaraderie. Even today the Rustic Canyon Recreation Center evokes the spirit of those early days. It’s a place where history and recreation meet. Come explore this special corner of Los Angeles.
