Deep within Kyoto’s embrace lies the Kamiya-gawa-no hotori-no misasagi, the final resting place of Emperor Kazan. But before we approach this serene mausoleum, let us journey back to the heart of his tumultuous life. Emperor Kazan ascended the Chrysanthemum Throne at the tender age of seventeen. His reign, though brief, spanned from 984 to 986. This period, nestled within the Heian era, was marked by political intrigue and personal tragedy. Emperor Kazan, born in 968, was the son of Emperor Reizei and grandson of the influential Fujiwara no Koremasa. Upon his ascension, Kazan faced a complex web of political factions, including his father-in-law and a court educator vying for control. Their ambitious reforms, though well-intentioned, clashed with established powers and ultimately contributed to the instability of his reign. Adding to the political turmoil, Emperor Kazan grappled with personal loss. The death of his beloved consort, Fujiwara no Shishi, while she was pregnant, deeply affected him. Some historical accounts suggest this tragedy, coupled with possible political machinations by Fujiwara no Kaneie to install his own grandson on the throne, led to Kazan’s abdication at just nineteen. The story of his departure from the Imperial Palace is shrouded in mystery and intrigue. One account tells of a clandestine journey to Gangyo-ji Temple (later known as Kazan-ji Temple), facilitated by Fujiwara no Michikane, where he was tonsured and entered the priesthood. It is said that only after arriving at the temple did Kazan realize he had been deceived. Even in his monastic life, drama followed. An incident involving an attack by political rivals left the former emperor shaken. Despite the turbulence of his early life, Kazan found solace in artistic pursuits. He excelled in painting, architecture, and poetry. He is even credited with editing the “Shui Waka Shu”, a renowned collection of Japanese poetry. His later years were devoted to spiritual pursuits, including a pilgrimage to 33 sacred sites, inspiring hymns still sung today. Here at the Kamiya-gawa-no hotori-no misasagi in Kyoto, the echoes of Emperor Kazan’s life resonate. His reign, though short-lived, reminds us of the fragility of power and the enduring power of art and spirituality.
